Brains
and Bulbs
On
February 26th, some of the smartest people from around the world
joined some of the smartest high school students in Denver for an
international exchange and a light bulb exchange. Fulbright students
from Russia, Libya, Japan, Nigeria and too many other countries to
name, paired up with high school students from the Denver Center for
International Studies to bring energy efficiency resources to the
Baker neighborhood in Denver. They knocked on almost 1,000 doors in
two hours. I can't resist in asking... how many super smart people
does it take to change 90 light bulbs, sign up 28 households for
recycling services and 65 households for energy audits? This time it
took 56 wonderful, dedicated, interesting students from all over the
globe.
Take
Charge! is taking off
The Take Charge! project is
taking off and making its way to communities across Colorado in 2011
and 2012. Within these 20-30 communities, high school and college
students learn about energy efficiency, renewable energy and green
jobs. The students then use their knowledge in a day of service to
reach out to their own communities' residents, offering to change
out incandescent porch bulbs to CFLs and providing people with
information on low- and no-cost energy efficiency resources. To
date, over 100 students in Denver, Englewood and Pueblo have brought
energy resources to over 1,500 Colorado residents. Over the next
several months, Groundwork Colorado will be working on this project
in Fort Collins, Golden, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs. Check out
the blog to see how students across the state are taking charge! http://www.TakeChargeColorado.blogspot.com/
Bordered
by the South Platte River
Denver's Globeville and Valverde neighborhoods are both
bordered by the South Platte River and the multi-use, paved trail
that runs parallel to it. In neighborhood surveys we found that
residents are largely unaware of this recreational trail, or, if
they are aware of it, they don’t know how to access it. The Colorado
Health Foundation has generously awarded Groundwork Denver grant
funding for the next two years to work intensively with residents in
these neighborhoods to improve access to the South Platte River
trail and other neighborhood recreational amenities. We'll be
hosting bike rides and nature walks, organizing volunteer
activities, and seeking community feedback on improvements that will
help residents access the trail safely and with more ease.
